Turkey Time
Posted by: Barbara Bibel
It’s almost Thanksgiving, so everyone is cooking turkey or tofurky. Kids have to do reports about what was served at the first Thanksgiving dinner and someone lost Grandma’s recipe for sweet potato pie. Working the desk can make you hungry these days! The gorgeous new Larousse Gastrnomique and the ever faithful Joy of Cooking will help answer many of those questions. There are also lots of Web sites from celebrity chefs at the Food Channel, university extensions, and the old Butterball Turkey folks. According to National Geographic, venison, lobster, clams, and birds (turkey may have been among these) were on the menu at the first Thanksgiving, but pumpkin pie, sweet potatoes, and cranberry sauce were not. No one really knows exactly what was on the menu at that feast. Of course families develop their own traditions. We may not be able to find Grandma’s recipe, but we can usually find something that will work.
We also have to answer another kind of question. Where is the nearest food bank? Who is serving free Thanksgiving dinner? 500 families were in line to sign up for the mayor’s toy drive this week. As we prepare our festive meals, we should also think about how we can help those who do not have the resources. Happy Thanksgiving.
