IPL/LII Merger
Posted by: Rebecca Vnuk

Very early next year, the Internet Public Library (IPL) and Librarians’ Index to the Internet (LII), two portals reference librarians have ipl2logo4relied on for finding good Web sites, will be reborn as a new site called ipl2: Information You Can Trust. This move began when LII’s funding was cut by half, forcing it to do less of everything. In 2008, Drexel’s iSchool, which hosts IPL, began hosting LII as well, with the intention of merging the two.

The Web keeps growing, and when Google-style, algorithm-based systems dominate Internet searching, it’s hugely important for librarians to have reliable indexes. Both IPL and LII have provided invaluable service over the years and I’m looking forward to seeing the new site when it debuts.
