The Pulitzer Prizes were announced this week and an article in the New York Times noted that for the first time a prize was awarded to an online news organization. ProPublica.org, with the subtitle ”journalism in the public interest”, is a non-profit news service that publishes only investigative journalism. A staff of over 30 journalists produce stories with “moral force” that shine “a light on exploitation of the weak by the strong and on the failures of those with power to vindicate the trust placed in them. ” The article that won the Pulitzer Prize described the work of doctors in Memorial Medical Center in New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina. Two other recent articles illustrate ProPublica’s mission. One is on possible problems of drilling for gas in central New York accompanied by a picture of a well less than 10 miles from where I live. A story published this week details how lobbyists and politician benefitted from concerts of Bruce Springsteen. This is a site that will be of interest and use to students as well as informed citizens.
