Reference, Butter, and Eggs

Reference depends on library traffic, and libraries are always looking for ways to bring more people in the doors. Here's a new one--at Baltimore Public Library, patrons can now order groceries online. This isn't a library equivalent of Peapod. The Baltimore City Health Department has partnered with the library to offer the Virtual Supermarket Project at two branches in neighborhoods that don't have large, conveniently located, competitively priced grocery stores. One goal of the program is to provide people in those neighborhoods with healthier food options. But since people have to come to the library to pick up their food, the library benefits too. You can read more about the program on the NPR Web site.
