Web Site of the Week: Skygod.com
Posted by: Christine Bulson

Memorial Day Weekend I was flying from the east coast to Wyoming and changed planes in ORD.  It reminded me that I had a reference question years ago, when the internet was in its infancy.  The question was why is O’Hare called ORD?  I found the answer by using the internet!  Since I now couldn’t remember why it is ORD,  I did a search and found Skygod.com.  This site is actually an article, “Airport ABCs:  An Explanation of Airport Identifier Codes” published in Air Line Pilot in 1994 and continutally updated by the author,  David English.  Although the article is not comprehensive,  it does provide explanations and the derivations of many of the codes. The answer - before O’Hare was named after a Navy pilot, Lt. Cmdr Edward O’Hare,  there was a small airport northwest of Chicago, Orchard Field.
