Collection Development
Posted by: Sara Rofofsky Marcus

As I sit and stare at the dwindling pile of print catalogs from the vendors, I start to wonder at what is happening to collaborative collection development. It seems the days of passing around a catalog where you initial what you think is interesting, seeing what others think, is going away. Instead we are relying on e-mailed or web-based catalogs, which just don’t have that same feel of collegiality. How can we bring this back? Should it be brought back?

  1. Elizabeth Says:

My colleague and I do collection development through email because we are at two different libraries across town from each other. We usually create lists or spread sheets with the titles we like hyperlinked to the reviews and/or information. Then we either get together to talk about it or exchange multiple emails about the various titles.

It’s very collaborative and I think it should be that way. There is no reason collecting can’t be collaborative just because everything is online. Maybe you could create a share site, wiki, or blog where everyone can read the information and leave comments?
