Next Week’s Reference Webinar

There’s still time to register for the Booklist Webinar, “Encyclopedia Evolution,” which will take place on Tuesday, November 16, at 1PM CST. Encyclopedia publishers have gone through enormous changes over the past 15 years or so, and representatives from the three that are still standing–Michael Levy (Encyclopedia Britannica), Evan St. Lifer (Scholastic, home of Grolier) and Sarah Bright (World Book)– will be talking about and demonstrating how they’ve transformed their core products. Joseph Janes from The University of Washington Information School will share his insights on what encyclopedias are for and how they’ve evolved.
I’ve had a chance to look at all of the presentations, and it’s most interesting to see the different ways in which the traditional encyclopedia that used to be the centerpiece of our print reference collection has been–and continues to be– reinvented.
