Where to send all that zucchini
Posted by: Barbara Bibel

If you have a garden with more veggies than you can use, what will you do with them? Your neighbors don’t want any more, but you don’t want to waste food. The Directory of Food Pantries http://ampleharvest.org/ offers gardeners a way to share their bounty with people in need. Food pantries are sites which distribute food directly to those who need it. Food banks gather food in bulk and supply pantries and other places which get it to consumers. The site is for gardeners, but it has enough information to make it useful for librarians and people in need who are searching for resources. Users may search by zip code or address to find a pantry nearby.  Pantries may register on the site so that people can find them. The site also includes information about hunger in America, current news, and links to relevant websites. There a over 3,000 pantries currently listed. Since 100 billion pounds of food, enough to eliminate hunger in the United States, are wasted every year, it is heartening to find a group that is  trying to remedy the situation.
