RBB Archive Weekly Peek

Known as “The Father of Black History,” Carter G. Woodson (1875-1950) founded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History (now called Association for the Study of African American Life and History) in 1915. In 1926, he established the first celebration of black history, Negro History Week. Fifty years later, Negro History Week became Black History Month.
Each year, the Association for the Study of African American Life and History sets a national Black History Month theme. The 2011 theme is African Americans and the Civil War.
Though I haven’t seen a reference work devoted to the topic of African Americans and the Civil War (reference publishers take note) the topic can be approached through several more general works, among them African Americans in the Military (rev. ed, 2010) and African Americans at War: An Encyclopedia (2004). Not to mention much larger works such as African American National Biography (2008).
Throughout the month of February, I’ll be looking in the RBB archive for reviews of other reference sources related to black history.
