Web Site of the Week: Google Art Project
Posted by: Christine Bulson
Earlier this month GoogleArtProject.com was launched which enables the user to view art works in 17 selected museums throughout the world including the Museum of Modern Art, Uffizi Gallery, Rijksmuseum, State Hermitage Museum, Palace of Versailles, the Tate Britain and the Metropolitan Museum. The project at present consists of about 1,000 works of art by 400 artists but Google hopes to add more museums and works in the future. Each museum has chosen one work which may be viewed at very high resolution. All the works have fine resolution which may be viewed through a zoom view. You may also stroll through galleries in the museums using Goggle Street View. For reference librarians the down side of this site is there is no comprehensive index to find what artists and works are included. You need to know the museum, name of the artist and of course the name of the work.
